Unit 19 focuses on teaching special groups including beginners, individuals, multilingual groups, and business English/English for Specific Purposes (ESP). When teaching beginners it's important to develop a safe, comfortable learning environment without constantly correcting mistakes which results in insecurity and a hesitancy to participate. The benefit of teaching individual students is the acute focus on individual needs and wants versus in a group that requires compromise. As an elementary school teacher, I felt the teaching children section offered an accurate portrayal of do's/don'ts in a lesson (i.e. behave silly, clearly demonstrate, speak slowly) as well as class discipline/management factors to consider that are both in (i.e. attention seeking behavior) and out (i.e. problems at home) of the teacher's control. Since I have not taught business English, this section was very helpful. Specifically, the needs analysis form shows how a teacher can get a better grasp of how the frame lessons based on the detailed needs/wants of the student.
