Very often EFL students find the tense system of English language the most difficult aspect of grammar, especially when they learn that there are 12 tenses in total, and often their own mother tongue has a different tense system. However, if grammar lessons that deal with tenses are introduced gradually and in the proper sequence the task of comprehending them can be made easier for students. In order to teach tense system of English, a teacher must have good knowledge of it himself/herself first. A teacher should first explain to students that there are three “times” in English (present, past and future) and that there are four aspects (simple, continuous, perfect and perfect continuous) and that combining “times” and aspects we get the above mentioned total number of tenses. When it comes to present tenses, they should be introduced to students gradually, starting with Present Simple and Present Continuous, and later on introducing Present Perfect and finally Present Perfect Continuous. When teaching tenses a teacher should explain how the that tense is made (form) in in which situations it is used (usage). Teachers should also provide relevant examples in sentences that illustrate specific usage. Also, when teaching tenses the teacher must be aware that for each tense there are some errors that students typically make so he can point that out to them. Also, there are various communicative activities that the teacher should incorporate in the activate phase of the lesson in order to reinforce the correct usage of each specific tense in English.
