There are many descriptions of what makes a good teacher however, a good teacher really cares about his/her teaching and cares more about the learning of the students. I agree with the statement because as a teacher it is very important to make your students understand what are you are teaching. A teacher takes up different roles in a classroom and nine of them are explained in Unit 1. The roles includes Manager, Organizer, Assessor, Prompter, Participant, Tutor, Facilitator, Model and Monitor. When I was teaching my students, I did not realise that I am taking up these roles because I was not aware of these roles and some of the roles it comes out naturally when I am teaching. Moreover, learning about these roles and realising the importance of it helps me connect and understand what I am doing in the class, what kinds of roles I am taking and how to perform these roles in an appropriate manner but these roles are taken depending on the situation and which and when these roles are needed. In addition, the unit also mentioned about good learners for example, the attributes of a good learner may have the willingness to listen to the language, trying to experiment the language, desire to learn and more. However, when a learner has these attributes, teachers are responsible to encourage them in the classroom. I believe encouraging students should be one of the top priorities for a teacher because different students have different attributes, goals and some might not even be interested. By encouraging them, it would persuade students in putting the effort and making their learning experience worthwhile. Learners are categorized into two different age groups, Young Learners and Adults. There are three stages of young learners. It talked about how these age groups are different in terms of motivation, nervousness, language awareness and more. There are various language levels and the common levels are beginners, elementary, pre-intermediate, intermediate, upper intermediate and advanced. I had a vague idea about the different ability levels in English language of students. This unit has taught me the common levels and it will help me understand students of different English abilities and cater them accordingly.
