Theories, Methods and Technics - the advantage of English Learners who have the opportunity to study the language while living in an English speaking environment, versus the ones who study English in their native countries. Engage, Study and Activate - a highly effective method put forward by Jeremy Harmer, who called these elements ESA. - this method's technics are perfectly thought out and put together, incorporating all the tried out and most effective key elements of teaching and learning the language. - different elicitation technics - Engage: to peak students' curiosity and get them fully involved in the lesson. - Study: these include all activities where the students focus on the language and how it is constructed. - Activate: this is the part of the lesson where the students put to use any and all their language abilities. - some lessons may be more focused on one of the three ESA elements but all three should be included in most lessons, that should start with an Engage Stage and finish with an Activate Stage. - ESA lessons: 'Straight Arrow', 'Boomerang', 'Patchwork'. - Engage Phase: where having a vast array of ideas/prompts, acquired through teaching and life experience, serves the teacher and students well. - Study Phase: not necessary but should be built on the Engage Phase, involving numerous language learning practices and exercises. - Activation Phase: using various activities that help to keep their/our minds curious and to develop a thirst for knowledge. - giving feedback is essential to further motivate, encourage and to advance the students' knowledge of the language. - corrections can be made throughout a lesson but never at the Engage Phase, and teacher - student correction should be the last resort. A very informative and engaging unit, filled with well received knowledge and constructive lessons. Now that I learned ESA, I undoubtedly embrace the elements this method offers.
