In order to learn a new language, there are two types of skills that the learner should work on 1)Receptive skills: It includes reading and listening. 2)Productive skills: It includes writing and speaking. This unit focused on receptive skills. There are two main reasons for reading and listening, we either do it for a purpose or for pleasure. Readers and listeners employ different skills when reading or listening: 1)Predictive skills: the ability to predict the content of an article from a headline. 2)Specific information - scanning: It is the ability to look for a particular information. 3)General idea - skimming: To read or listen to get a general idea about the content. 4)Detailed information: To read or listen in detail to benefit from it. 5)Deduction: It is the ability to understand the implied meaning. It is crucial to choose topics that interest students and motivate them to participate in the class; this can be achieved by getting to know the students and their interests. Also, achieving a balance between pre-teaching new vocabulary and letting the students access unfamiliar words and expression is the best strategy for them to learn effectively. Moreover, the teacher should expose students to both authentic and non-authentic texts as each type plays a different role in language learning. To give an effective receptive skill lesson, a teacher should: 1)Choose a subject that piques the students' interest. 2)Build interest in the engage phase. 3)Incorporate activate phases related to the topic. 4)Use teaching aids. 5)Pre-teach difficult vocabulary that is important for understanding the text or audio.
