Modal auxiliary verbs, such as can, could, may, should, would (etc.), are used to express obligation, possibility, ability, and permission. Their use also marks the formality of an expression. They are formed with other verbs. Passive voice is formed by making the object of an active sentence into the subject. In this way, the focus is no longer on the doer. And the agent of the action can even be omitted altogether. Passive voice can be in any tense and is formed by using be + past participle. Relative clauses are dependent clauses that modify a noun. They give it more information. Defining clauses give essential information to the sentence. Non-defining relative clauses give extra information that is not necessary to the overall meaning of the sentence. This is marked by using commas. Phrasal verbs are verbs that use a verb and one or two particles, but operate as a single unit. Careful attention should be paid to how they interact with their objects.
