Unit 15 is based on Evaluation and testing. Evaluation of students is something that all teachers do in order to adequately determine student learning progress. Teachers are always interested in knowing whether or not students understand what is being taught. It’s very important to evaluate students in order to determine their language level. Some of the ways in which a student’s language level is assessed are: through tutorials, evaluation and tests. The student evaluation allows students to evaluate the course by use of a questionnaire or guided discussion. In terms of tests, there are many different types of tests which a teacher can use to evaluate students.
Some of these are:
• Placement test- This allows the teacher to place the student in the appropriate class or language level.
• Diagnostic test- This is done at the beginning of the course in order to find out the students English knowledge. This is when the teacher finds out how he/she will have to conduct the lesson to suit their needs.
• Progress test- This can be conducted weekly or even monthly. This type of test allows the teacher to know how much information is retained by students and what needs to be revised.
• Practice tests – This usually follows the format and structure of external examinations that the student is preparing for.
