This unit is about teaching special groups. We have different types of classes.
Teaching beginners. Beginners can be categorized into; the absolute beginner, the false beginner, the adult beginner, the young beginner and the beginner without roman alphabet.
The following are the methodologies and techniques of teaching beginners; be as visual as possible, pase your lesson, arrange your classroom, use pair and group work, use choral repetition etc.
Teaching individual students. There is a large demand for one to one lessons. Some of the advantages are; no mixed levels, needs can be clearly defined etc. The disadvantages are, loss of classroom dynamics, tiredness etc. The following suggestions can be made; at the initial meeting complete analysis form, exchange pnone nunbers, try and arrange a combination of what the student wants and what you think she/he needs etc. Suitable activities are; short stories, horoscopes,quizzes and recipes etc.
Teaching young children. Teaching children can be one of the most rewarding of all students to teach. They are so curious and thus motivated. Children's span of attention is less than that of adults.The classroom environment should be a pleasant and welcoming place. During the Lesson; always use english, speak slowly, in short and direct sentences, be prepared to make fun of your self.
When it comes to discipline, generally the behavior and attitude or personality of the teacher is perhaps the single most important factor in a classroom and can thus have a major effect on discipline. don't be inconsistent, dont have favourites, never threaten or inflict physical violence.
The other type is Business english. This is teaching english to business people. It can place in a number of ways. one-to-one, company goup and school group. one of the problems of Teaching business people is that they are often tired.
Before you begin any course, youhave to find out what the students want and what they need. After initially testing the clients to get an idea of their level, the next step should be to give them an ' needs analysis'.
After the pre-course assessment of needs and ability fromthe questionnaires responses and negotiation with the group, begin listing suitable learning objectives,situations, language and materials.
You needto evaluate the students in the middle of the course.
When it comes to materials, they should be presented to the students typed and professional. you should consider the following;
Before you begin, find as much as possible about the company.
Your expertise- remember you are not an expert in the clients field of acviy or business, but you are an expert in the english language.
On arrival- be punctual, organized,use english and have a good rapport with the reception and administration.
During the course, keep records, avoid gossiping and use relavant examples.
After the course- write a post-course report.
In adittion to the above, this unit covers monolingual and multilingual classes.
I have leanrt that i should not use the mother toungue in my lessons. use english always.
I have learnt that while teaching children, my lessons should be full of fun and activities should relate to the children's own interest.
I have learnt that i should motivate my students a lot.
