Ute, Iowa TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
This unit covers the various methodologies used in teaching another language, and delves deeper into ESA (Engage-Study-Activate) lessons. Various methodologies covered include Grammar-Translation, PPP, and Suggestopaedia. It was interesting to learn of all of these methodologies as I have not heard of more than a handful, and I liked understanding the theories behind some of them. ESA lessons are broken in to Engage, Study, and Activate stages. In the Engage stage, the teacher wants the students to get involved and elicit interest in the language. In the Study stage, the focus is on the new language point for the lesson. The study stage is where students learn the new language concept/grammar/etc and how to use it, often through worksheets and exercises that reinforce the new information. In the Activate stage, students are allowed more creativity to work with what they've just learned, sometimes through role-play or communication games. The goal of the Activity stage is fluency. The structure of the ESA stages can vary, with the straight arrow lessons, boomerang lessons, or patchwork lessons. Mixing up the lesson structure is good to keep students from getting bored of the same routine every class. This unit was very informative and broke down the different aspects of an ESA lesson very well.
