This unit was an introduction to tests and exams in order to assess the level, progress, and proficiency of students learning English. In the class it is important to teach the material, but there also needs to be a way to monitor what the students are actually learning. Tests should be given throughout the course to understand the starting level and how the student is progressing. If students intend to take external exams, for exam the TOEFL if they are applying to an American university as a non-native English speaker, the teacher could give practice exams to help prepare the students. Exams and tests are not the only way to assess the level of the students, but they are a good way to monitor progress. I have found, in my attempts to learn foreign languages, that continual testing is beneficial because it helps to reinforce the language that you know and continue to add new language as you go through the course. If you are taught part of a language and then do nothing with it, for older learners, it will not be as easy to store that knowledge, and it may be forgotten.
