Unit 12 – Productive Skills is based on teaching skills Writing and speaking are two productive skills. The speaking activities in the classroom include controlled activities, guided activities and creative communication. Controlled activities are those activities that are controlled by the teacher. The activities include drilling and prompting students. The guided activities are also accuracy based and it includes model dialogues and guided role-play. The creative communication is fluency based and the scenario is created by the teacher but the content is not. Creative communication includes free role plays, discussions, information gap among others things. The difference between accuracy based and fluency based is with accuracy based activities the teacher focuses on grammar while fluency based activities allows students to be more creative and focuses less on grammar.
Teachers should create a comfortable and stress free environment which will encourage students interaction. Some of the techniques used to encourage student interaction are:
• Pair work
• Group-work
• Controlled and guided practice before fluency activities
• Make the speaking activities purposeful
• Change the classroom dynamics
• Careful planning
