Unit fourteen talks about coursebooks and lesson materials. It divides the materials into two groups: authentic and non-authentic/created. Authentic texts are texts which were not created to be used in a language learning environment, such as newspaper articles and books. Non-authentic/created texts, on the other hand, are made for the language learning environment, like flashcards and role-play cards. It discusses the benefits and the disadvantages of using a textbook. While a textbook offers a set standard and syllabus, it can often be too rigid and not tailor to the needs of the students. Textbooks often have supplementary materials to go along with it, but this may stifle the creativity of the teacher to create their own materials. The best use of a textbook is to balance it with other created materials made by the teacher by omitting, supplementing, replacing, or adapting.
