An English sentence is at minimum made by combining two parts of speech: a noun and a verb. Nouns are the subjects of the sentence, and names things such as places, things, people, ideas, or states. Verbs are words that tell what is happening--either what the subject is doing or what state the subject is in. Sentences often have several other kinds of words also. "The" is a definite article and "a" and "an" are indefinite articles. These articles are used before nouns. With exceptions, "the" is typically used before particular nouns, whereas "a" and "an" are used before any general singular noun. Adjectives are words that describe nouns, and are often used in lists. Adverbs modify verbs or adverbs in order to give more information about how something is happening or what kind of state it is in. Gerunds are verbs made into nouns by the addition of "-ing," such as "playing" or "skipping." By using a gerund, the action becomes the subject of the sentence. Pronouns are words used in place of more specific nouns. For example, "the boy" becomes "he," and "the elephant" becomes "it." Prepositions show relation between a noun or pronoun and some other word in the sentence. For example, a preposition may be used to show where a noun is located in relation to something, or at what time the noun is occuring. Conjunctions combine words or groups of words in a sentence. Common conjunctions include "and," "but," and "because."
