Unit 19 – Teaching special groups. This unit is based on special groups like; beginners, individual students, children, business English, monolingual class and multilingual class.
The types of beginners are:
• The absolute beginner- knows no English.
• The false beginner- has been exposed to English but did not retain the language.
• The adult beginner- made the decision to learn English.
• The young beginner- lack motivation as they didn’t make the decision to learn English themselves.
• The beginner without Roman alphabet- needs a lot of work on basic literacy skills.
Some teaching activities are impossible with individual lessons and so teachers will have to be creative in getting the message across. Children have an innate curiosity which makes it easy to teach them. However, they also have a short attention span which makes it difficult to teach for long periods. The teacher will have keep the lesson fun and ensure that it relates to the student’s interest.
