In English, there are two categories of skills to consider; receptive and productive. Today we will be looking at only one type of skill- receptive. Receptive skills are considered the reading and listening section of class learning. Since both reading and listening are similar in the ways we learn things, many of the ideals are the same. There are two reasons we read and listen: 1) for enjoyment/entertainment and 2) for a purpose. At times, both concepts can come into play, depending upon the situation. Within this concept, there are specialist skills we must consider. There are five specialist skills we come to consider when either reading or listening for pleasure or for a suppose purpose. The first is by predicative skills. In this concept, we predict by a title what the reading or the story is about. Next, we consider skimming the content quickly for gaining the gist of the material we want to learn more about. Scanning is also a similar concept, but in that, we are just looking or listening for terms we are wanting. The fourth concept is by detailed listening or reading. This means we are reading or listening to something in its entirety for a full perspective. The fifth and last specialist skill is deduction. Deduction is looking words for face value and making a deduction on the meaning of them without knowing or understanding the context. The last thought to consider is how we can teach receptive skills effectively. In this regard, we will want to think about using the ESA (patchwork or straight arrow) teaching method (Engage, Study, Activate). This will allow students time to study, apply the material in class, and help the teacher understand where they struggle most. Usually, language is the hardest and most difficult area for student. As teachers, we want to make sure we do not use authentic language versus non-authentic language. Authentic language is used for high-level, fluent speaking students and must be carefully selected when used, whereas, non-authentic language is geared towards a certain level and helps the student gain an understanding more easily. In addition, we want our classes to contain topics that encourage and motivate the students to want to learn more. Try to take time to get to know your students, and consider what topics interest them. If we follow these tips and ideals, we will help our students succeed and understand the material being taught to their best abilities. Moreover, our classes will be more enjoyable if we consider what are students likes and dislikes are.
