Teachers should not rely on course books for their teaching. Firstly, course books may not be available, and second, the materials created by the teacher can be more interesting and relevant than a course book. Authentic materials are any materials that a native speaker would see or hear around them, such as newspapers, magazines, brochures, or menus. These materials are not designed for English learners, so teachers must select them carefully for appropriateness to the level of the students, and the teacher must decide how to use these materials. Created materials are designed and created by the teacher to replace or supplement materials from a course book. Examples of created materials are crosswords, picture stories, flashcards, and word search puzzles. Materials can work in lieu of or in tandem with course books. Teachers may choose to omit an irrelevant course book, or replace it with something similar. They may supplement it with materials, or adapt it by using the same basic materials but in their own way.
