Well I feel like I learned the most from this lesson because from here I was brought to the side of the students (beginner and business students). I learned the different categories of beginner students with its brief explanation: Absolute beginners- type of language student who have no English at all, False beginner- type of students who might have undergone English course but have not properly retained much of the language. Perhaps, they can understand quickly and able to produce some simple language structures, Adult beginner- those who will probably be highly motivated to learn English language since they have taken a decision to learn it, Young beginner- those who tend to pick up new language quickly than adult beginners but will always lack motivation to learn English language and might not have seen the importance of learning the language and its benefits. Hence, lack of interest and motivation, and lastly, Beginner without basic Roman alphabet- students who know nothing about the language. However, a lot of basic literacy skills would be taught, reading and writing practical activities would also be necessary. Another important thing I learned from this unit was the approach the teacher should adapt to in teaching both beginner and business students. It was also explained how teaching individual differ from teaching groups. Teaching individual students has no mix of levels, students are highly motivated and needs can be clearly defined, and a close relationship between the students can be developed while teaching groups has a mix of different levels of students and students with less understanding capability could be paired or grouped together with brilliant ones. This lesson also taught me some information about obtaining needs analysis for a group of Business English students and how could I use this information when planning the program. My most favorite topic discussed was the difference between teaching monolingual students and multilingual students. The task 6 from the worksheet after the unit was my favorite question. It was a great opportunity to ask myself and reflect a moment. As a conclusion, this unit has taught me the important of knowing and understanding the do’s and don’ts of teaching young learners and business learners. Unexpected circumstances may arise because of differences, but understanding your students and knowing their needs are still two important things to consider always for a teacher to effectively meet their language needs as a learner of English language.
