In this unit, I learned the four basic skills in any language especially the receptive skills (reading and listening) which this unit really focused on. This was a good review for me. I realized that the best way to improve receptive skills is from exposure whether from an enjoyable authentic text or a quality text book. For example, television, music, books and magazines are great ways to build vocabulary. One of the important things I learned that the teacher needs to consider when selecting a text or dialogue for his/her students is that authentic materials/texts can demotivate learners if these materials aren’t appropriately graded or applicable to their interests. As a teacher, it is an important consideration to choose material which isn’t too difficult or easy, and also which relates culturally. Adaptation is really an important consideration for teachers. Teaching reading and listening as equally important skills, incorporating them into my lessons will definitely make my lessons integrated and balanced.
