A conditional sentence is comprised of two clauses, an "if" clause and a main clause. The main clause contains an action or state that can only be realized as long as the condition in the "if" clause is satisfied. An example of a conditional is: If I had a dog, I would play with it everyday. There are five main conditionals. The zero conditional refers to actions and facts that are irrefutable. The first conditional talks about a situation in the future that is possible, probable, or certain once the condition has been satisfied. For example: If she gets enough sleep, she will go to the party. The second conditional communicates a present or future hypothetical situation that is presently not true and is unlikely to be true. For example: If I met Barack Obama, I would give him a big hug. The third conditional refers to a hypothetical past action and the hypothetical past result. For example: If enough young people had gone to the polls, our candidate might have won. The mixed conditional refers to a hypothetical past state and the hypothetical current consequence. For example: If I had ditched class, I would have missed the lesson. Reported speech is when a second person is saying to a third party what a first person has said. This reported speech is in the past form, as it reports what someone else has already said.
