Unit 18 covered the topics of modals, phrasal verbs and passive voice. Modal auxilliary verbs are used to add meaning to the main verb and can be used to express different levels of formality. For example "May I borrow your car?" vs. "Can I borrow your car?". Modal verbs do not change according to the person being refered to and are expressed the same way in both present and future tenses. Past tense modal verbs can express past ideas in different ways depending on meaning. When reading this unit it was clear to me that this concept can be challenging to students, as swaping one word can significantly alter the meaning of a sentence. Passive voice (and how it differs from active voice) was covered in this unit. When speaking or writing in the passive voice, the object of an active verb is the subject of the passive verb. Passive voice is used when it is unknown or unimportant who performed the action. Relative clauses were also discussed in this unit. A relative clause is one of three differnt types, independent and dependent being the other two. Relative clauses modify a noun in a sentence and can also be referred to as an adjective clause. A relative clause are either defining (essential to the meaning of a sentence) or non-defining (not essential to the meaning of a sentence). Finally, the unit also covered the subject of Phrasal verbs, which consist of a verb plus one or two particles which operate as one item. Phrasal verbs can be one of three types: intrasitive, transitive seperable and transitive inseparable.
