I could relate as a volunteer to a lot of what was said in this unit. The students in our class are of many different levels. Some have had a little English in their former countries, some have had no English, and the really tough ones are illiterate in their own language. I would assume that this would only happen in a group of immigrants. As a teacher I find it is a little too easy to want to succumb to using their native language. I have many Haitian students and I admit I conjugated the verb "etre" to help a student understand conjugating to be. As a volunteer (even more than a beginning) teacher I do find it helpful to have students with the same native tongue help each other out. I think this is different in the type of class I teach since it is a good lesson for them to lend helping hands to each other. This eliminates a lot of the competition. I do remember that when I was learning French, listening to tapes and trying to write what I had heard was one of the more useful teaching lessons.
