The unit discusses the various ideas that modals can be used to express when used before other verbs to add meaning such as obligation, possibility, permission/prohibition, ability and advice. Each modal auxiliary verb has its uses and don't always express the same ideas as another. Certain modal auxiliary verbs will appear in the present and future tense but not in the past tense. This unit also explained that there are two voices used in English such as the active voice and the passive voice. The main focus was on the passive voice - it is used when the performer is not known, not important or we don't want it disclosed. When the passive voice wants the reader to know who the performer is, the passive is used with a 'by' phrase. Furthermore, the unit briefly mentions the three categories of clauses: independent, dependent and relative. There are two types of relative clauses and they are defining and non-defining. Defining clauses includes essential meaning to the sentence as opposed to non-defining clauses where the information is not. To distinguish the difference between the two is to acknowledge the information between the commas as it is usually not essential information in order for the sentence to make sense. Phrasal verbs are quite difficult to teach as well as learn. It is more ideal for the teacher to use them casually in conversations so that the students are exposed to it and hopefully use them naturally. When teaching the subject, it is probably more easier if the subject was chosen to avoid confusion. There are three types of phrasal verbs: intransitive, transitive separable and transitive inseparable.
