Unit 11 covers the receptive skills of learning: reading and listening. In general, there are two main purposes for reading. The first is to read for a purpose; the second is to read for pleasure. There are several methods that concern how we read and listen. It can have to do with predictive skills (being able to guess what material is going to be in the text based on headlines or titles), general ideas (skimming for a general understanding), and deduction from context (understand of text based on current situation). This unit highlights that it is important to pre-teach problematic vocabulary, but not use it as a crutch; students must still be able to guess some words from context. It is also important to choose texts carefully. They should be pertinent to the age and level of the learner. It is equally important to choose topics that are interesting to the students because this will help motivate them to learn.
