This unit covers teaching new language. We see how to teach vocabulary, grammar and language functions. Whatever the level of the class, the students have to do the following with the new language; 1 be exposed to it 2 understand its meaning 3 understand how it is used 4 be able to practice and produce it. Further more, this unit covers teaching vocabulary. A learner's receptive vocabulary is much larger than his or her productive vocabulary. While selecting vocabulary, this criteria is followed; appropriacy to the student, appropriacy to the task, frequency and coverage, teachability. The techniques for teaching vocabulary are as follows. while at the engage stage, you can use; realia, pictures etc. study phase you can use gap filling exercise, study from texts, among others. At the activate stage you can use; role play, simulations etc. While introducing grammatical structures, students need to know; meaning of the language, how it is used, forms and patterns, spoken and written forms. techniques are; engage phase, you use; discussions, question and answer, etc. study phase you use; gap fills, drilling among others. activate phase you use; discussion, communication games etc. In addition to the above, this unit covers teaching language functions. language functions include areas such as; agreeing, suggesting, inviting among many others. Boomerang and patchwork lessons of ESA are very effective. Role play works the best here. I have learnt that I have to ensure that students are introduced to new language in a balanced and manageable way. I have learnt that lessons, that are specifically targeted to grammar or vocabulary use straight arrow ESA approach. However, I have also learnt that an effective teacher gets to think about which structure is most appropriate to the class and to the language that will be introduced.
