Unit 19 discusses how to teach various special groups. Some teachers will have to teach beginners. There are more than just one type of beginner, for example, the false beginner, adult beginner, and young beginner. Teachers should be aware of possible problems when teaching beginner classes, such as what to do if students can't get through all of the planned materials. Teachers should not rush through material. In general, teachers should be aware and responsive to students' needs. They should create and encouraging environment and not over-correct. They should try to keep lessons engaging and interesting for their students. Teachers may have to teach individual students. While some activities cannot be done with 1-1 lessons, teachers can still do activities like have discussions, practice listening and pronunciation, and go over important grammar and vocabulary. These and many other activities can still help students learn in 1-1 settings. Teachers could find themselves teaching children. In this case, the teacher wants to make sure they are giving clear instructions and teaching necessary material while also maintaining a pleasant and encouraging environment for the children through fun activities like songs, games, or arts and crafts. Teachers will also want to make sure they manage the classroom well and don't allow for disruptive behavior. Teachers have control over disruptive behavior stemming from attention seeking, peer pressure or boredom, and they should make sure to address these problems quickly. Some teachers may have to teach business English or English for Specific Purposes. In this case, the teacher will want to test their clients to get an idea of their English level and perform a needs analysis to make sure the lessons are fulfilling the needs of the client. In these situations, teachers should also be aware that clients can vary widely in age, language levels, motivations, and various other aspects. Making sure to be prepared and gain feedback from clients is very important when teaching business English to clients. Teachers can also find themselves teaching monolingual or multilingual classes. Some advantages of teaching multilingual classes is that students are from different countries with different backgrounds and different mother tongues. They will have to communicate with each other in English more often, and they will likely have more exposure to English if they are studying in an English speaking country. Teaching monolingual classes also has its advantages. Students will likely have the same mother tongue, which can mean that they will all have similar difficulties in English, and the teacher can address those problems as a group. They also share similar cultural backgrounds, so it would allow the teacher to identify interesting topics for the students. In both monolingual and multilingual classes, the teacher should only use English. This unit emphasize the importance of understanding your students. Teachers who know their more about their students' motivations, language level, experience, etc. can tailor their lessons to what their students need and teach more effectively.
