In unit 18 modal auxiliary verbs and the passive voice are examined, also there is given a brief overview of phrasal verbs and relative clauses. Modals can be used to express different ideas, such as obligation, advice, permission or prohibition, possibility or probability and ability. Passive voice is used when the action is performed on the subject and the performer of the action is not known or unimportant. A relative clause is introduced by a relative pronoun: who, which, that, whose, whom, etc or there may be no relative pronoun. There are two types of relative clauses defining and non-defining. The detailed explanation of each type is given in the unit. Phrasal verbs consist of a verb plus one or two particles, and there are three types of phrasal verbes: intransitive, transitive inseparable and transitive separable.
