This unit covered the four main tenses that occur in the past in the English language (past simple, past perfect, past progressive, and past perfect progressive). While I recognize that the past perfect and past perfect progressive aren't commonly used in everyday communication, I feel like some examples in the unit didn't necessarily require the tense. For example: "He arrived late; he hadn't realized the roads would be so icy." It may be a personal colloquialism of sorts, but I feel that this sounds too formal. I do understand that in this instance it relates two past actions as occurring one before the other, however, I feel like it could be understood just as well with the second part of the sentence using the past simple tense.
