In this unit I learned about different past tenses. I learned that verb may be in the simple past (meaning that an action took place in the past) or in the perfect past (an action in the past preceded another action in the past). I further learned that either of these might be continuous (perfect past being continuous up until the time that the speaker is thinking of, and simple past at any other point in the past in which an act is progressive).
