The unit ' Teaching New Language' covered three major components in teaching a foreign language, which are the teaching and the selection of the new vocabulary to the students, the introduction of new grammar structures and the teaching of language functions. I must admit that up to now I was unaware of all the distinct components in teaching, that are mentioned above. I saw language teaching and learning as a whole, without being able to distinguish them and focus on them separately in order to achieve a thorough understanding of the process of teaching in class. Teachers, of course, despite knowing the distinct components of teaching, must ensure that students are introduced to the new language in a balanced and manageable way,as the book states. In other words, grammar and vocabulary are not truly effective in isolation. Furthermore, there are four things that students have to do while learning a new language, they have to be exposed to it, understand its meaning, understand how it is constructed and be able to practice and produce it. When teaching new vocabulary, teachers need to be aware of their learner's receptive and productive vocabulary, and that students need to know the meaning, use, the grammar, the interaction and the spelling and pronunciation of every new word they learn. The same goes for the learning of the grammatical structures of English. Moving on to to the third component which is the teaching of language functions, students will be learning how to use the language in every day situations which involves inviting, refusing, agreeing or disagreeing and the appropriateness of the language, when we have to be formal or informal, tentative and technical. The last component really stresses the need for activation of the language in class.
