Keeping with the basic three classroom activity phases of Engage, Study and Activate, this unit looks at possible ways to teach vocabulary, grammatical structures and language function. Various activities appropriate for each of these class phases are offered, and there is advice given on how to select specifically which words or structures to teach and what kind of information is important for students to grasp during such lessons. Generally speaking, the Engage phase includes either visual aids, warm-up style discussions or some sort of active prompting or discussion to elicit the themes, words and structures that will be covered, the Study phase gets the students to focus through some sort of activity or drill, the purpose of which is to have the student apply themselves to the task of understanding the new points about the language taught, and the activate stage includes activities such as role-play, debate or more nuanced discussion, where students have an opportunity to use whichever language structures they see fit, including the new words of the day or of the previous lessons.
