This unit summarises the main parts of speech that English grammar seeks to recognise and classify. Definitions and examples were provided for the following parts of speech: nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, articles, pronouns, Gerunds, prepositions and conjunctions. This provided me with a ‘refresher’ on the grammar I learnt in school, as well as introducing some new parts of speech that were beyond the scope of secondary school grammar.
The unit was a sobering reminder of how difficult the English language is for ESL students. There seem to be so many rules about how to write and speak English, but then an equal number of exceptions! I began to think about how I would teach these sorts of concepts to an ESL class. Clear explanations, lots of examples and constant repetition occurred to me as important methods to use in illustrating and reinforcing these more complex grammatical concepts to ESL students.
