Before embarking on this unit, I have always thought that the teachers usually play the role of the manager, supervisor, facilitator, expert and sometimes, peer. I did not know that teachers can play so many other roles such as the model and prompter. Comparisons between children and adult learners are not something new as they are essentially a comparison between pedagogy and andragogy but I like how the video further break down the age of the young children into 2-7, 8-13 and 14-18 years of old because this is new to me and a very useful piece of information indeed. While I do agree with the fact that adult learners are often more motivated, I believe that they are more extrinsically motivated for reasons such as economic decisions stated in the video, it also made me reflect on how can we, as educators, cultivate intrinsic motivation in adult learners. Having said that, I have not had a definite answer to this yet as motivation is a very complex area and extrinsic motivation may not necessarily be a bad thing. Anyway, it is a good way to start the course with knowing more about teachers and learners!
