This unit covers the teaching of productive skills. These are: speaking and writing. Speaking activities in the classroom may be: controlled, guided or creative. Controlled activities include drilling, which may be covered in a three by three approach, using three repetitions by the whole class and then three individuals chosen by name. In both cases, the teacher models the pronunciation for the students to imitate. Guided activities may include dialogues and guided role-play. Creative activities may include free role play, discussions or games. Students should be motivated and encouraged to speak and interact. Writing activities should look at handwriting, spelling and punctuation. Punctuation may be very different in English when compared to the students' native language. Examples of typical ESA classes are provided. Similarly to the material for the previous unit, I found this unit to be very helpful as it contained both good structures and good ideas for successfully engaging the students.
