Unit 7 deals with techniques for teaching new language whether this is grammar, vocabulary or functions. The unit provides different ways of teaching new language with sample lesson plans and suitable activities. There are four things students need to do with a new language 1.Be exposed to it 2.Understand it's meaning 3.Understand how its constructed 4.Be able to practice and produce it Lessons targeted to grammar or vocabulary commonly use the 'straight arrow" ESA approach, where as the functions-based lessons are approached with the "boomerang' or "patchwork" ESA structures. When selecting vocabulary to teach, we need to consider the following: - Appropriateness to the students - Appropriateness to the task or lesson - Frequency of use and coverage - How teachable is it A student needs to know about a vocabulary item Given are examples to clarify some ideas. Meaning – what the word means Use – how and when it is appropriate to use the word Pronunciation – how the word is pronounced correctly Ex: The placing of stress on a part of a word can affect its meaning (REcord – noun; reCORD – verb) Grammar – where it belongs Spelling – how the word is written Ex: Students need to understand that some words are spelled differently in American English and British English (color- AE; colour-BRE). Interaction – how it relates to other words On a personal note I found referring to Unit 3 was needed and helpful as we dealt with The ‘Straight arrow’, ‘Boomerang’ and ‘Patchwork’ ESA in more detail in that unit, but I have found the tasks in this unit to really help complete the puzzle to understand the whole picture better.
