It was very helpful to compare the poorly run class session and the well-run class session in the two videos provided. In the first session, the teacher was unorganized, cross, frustrated, unclear, disrespectful, and discouraging. He did not appear to want to be there and talked at the students too much. They did not appear to understand or learn anything at all. In the second session, he was organized, kind, patient, clear, respectful, and encouraging. He seemed to genuinely want to be there an allowed for a lot of student talk time. They were successfully using the new language at the end of the class. This unit demonstrated the need for rapport between the teacher and students that facilitates teacher confidence and student participation and learning. He engaged them with an elicitation activity in which they used familiar language, continued to elicit responses during the study phase as he taught new language concepts, and ended with an activate phase that reinforced the lesson while giving them a fun way to practice using the language in context with everyone talking. Throughout, feedback given was clear and encouraging.
