This unit covered more on how to teach the vocabulary, grammar, and functions of a new language to students. Teaching vocabulary is important for new students to learn the basic words needed for a new language. The student must know the meaning, usage, grammar, interaction, spelling, and pronunciation of these new words. For teaching vocabulary, a simple straight arrow structured ESA lesson is commonly used. Grammatical structures are important for a student to learn. Any student will need to know the how the language is built, such as the meaning of the language, how it's used, the formation of patterns, and learn how the language is spoken and written. The grammatical structures of a language can often be taught with a patchwork ESA lesson. Teaching language functions has areas such as accepting and recieving. It also includes the appropriateness of what kind of language someone uses, such as formal and informal. This can often be taught using a boomerang or patchwork ESA lesson. Of course, the ESA lessons listed with each parts of teaching a new language are often used, may not always be the best option. It should be up to the teacher's discretion on what type of lesson will cater best to the students.
