Unit 5 focuses on classroom management. This can involve discipline, building rapport, teacher talk time (TTT), student talk time (TTT), student activities, instruction, and classroom arrangement. In this unit, eye contact and gestures were explained to provide a great amount of nonverbal communication that can help change the pace of the lesson. Eye contact and gestures can grab the attention of a student, call on a student, ensure everyone is listening. and can possibly stop a disruptive student. This unit also discussed how and when group pairings are effective in the classroom. Whole-group activities create a sense of belonging and are very easy to set up by the teacher, but it reduces the time for students to speak and may not be appealing for shy students to talk in front of the entire class. Allowing students to work on their own allows the teacher to give better individual assessments, but it prevents students from communicating with other students which is important in a language class. Pairwork dramatically increases the talk time between students and provides a safe environment for the student to talk before sharing their ideas with the entire class. This method can be noisy and may make it difficult for certain students to concentrate. Getting the right pairings may be difficult as well because some students may dislike the student they are partnered with. Classroom arrangement plays another important role when it comes to managing a classroom. This unit covered three types of arrangements: orderly rows, horseshoe/circular, and individual tables. Orderly rows style is the most traditional and works best with larger classrooms, horseshoe/circular style is best fitted for a smaller classroom. This provides a more intimate and less-intimidating teaching style. Individual tables are great for group work and helps the teacher work with specific tables that may need more attention; however, it is more difficult to maintain discipline in this setting. Teacher Talking Time and Student Talking Time were discussed in this unit, as well. With TTT, the student can understand a prime example of how to speak natural and correct English. It is difficult to provide this information any other way. Though TTT provides a good resource, this should be kept to a minimal because it does not allow the student to practice their newly-leaned skills. There are many reasons that a student may be acting out, and it is important for the teacher to build a good rapport with them and the rest of the class. When disciplining the student, it is important to act immediately, focus on the behavior and not the student, and remain calm. In order to build a good rapport with the student, the teacher much be punctual, always prepared to teach, carry out threats, return homework properly, and many more. This unit will be helpful in managing large and small classrooms. Though I have taught classes in the past, this will definitely add to my knowledge on classroom management,
