This Unit covers the basic components for teaching ESL. The Unit covers several different learning theories and strategies such as Grammar-Translation, Suggestopedia, Audio-Visual, Task-Based Learning, and the Silent Way teaching and learning styles. However, the majority of the chapter covers the ESA (Engage Study Activate) method for teaching. There are three types of strategies a teacher can use ESA for, but no matter which strategy is used a lesson plan must always begin with Engage and end with Activate. Engaging involves the teacher warming up students by having them recall previous material and getting them to explain or understand some words. It is the "hook" to get student attention. The Study phase is where students will take new material and learn it on their own, through an activity such as a worksheet. The Activate stage is where students will attempt to apply the language in a certain setting. Depending upon the level of students and the amount of classroom time allotted, the three strategies a teacher can employ are Straight-Arrow (E-S-A), Boomerang (E-A-S-A) or patchwork, which involves any combination of study and activate between engage and activation. This is the structure for ESL teaching.
