There are different kinds of assessment and all can be useful to help determine the best needs of the student. It is possible to view assessments as not a tool to rank students, but rather a way to discover in which specific area a student is strong, and in which area a student requires support. Even in a small class of students of similar ages, differences may be assessed. The teacher can lead students to help each other without highlighting or mentioning strengths or weaknesses, but through careful planning of student grouping and a variety of subject matter. Students can be gently led to help each other and to learn from each other. This mimics, hopefully, the way all people converse in a natural, authentic setting. Assessments are helpful tools when used carefully and with compassion.
