Unit 6 concludes the course by giving useful information regarding teaching business English around the world. The first section discusses general rules for business etiquette. The need to research and adhere to the local culture and customs of the place where you will be working is stressed throughout the unit. To aid in this research, a checklist of questions is provided. I found this helpful and only wish I'd had this list when I began my teaching career! Knowing which gestures to avoid and what gifts are acceptable are particularly useful list items. The next section covers ways to find employment including things to keep in mind while searching for a position. I enjoyed the list of questions to ask a potential employee as there were several I hadn't thought of before and are important to know, like asking what support systems are in place for teachers and if there is a probation period. I'll be sure to reference this list the next time I have an interview. Following the portion on job hunting is a section providing practical advice on preparing a resume/cv and cover letter. I feel confident in my resume writing skills and I already follow most of the advice provided. However, I learned some new techniques that I believe will improve my resume. For example, listing the dates and school/company names of my various teaching positions followed by a description of my responsibilities and achievements as to not repeat information or make the work experience section too long. I think this is great advice and appreciate the practical and important tips such as these that were included in the course. Finally, descriptions and links regarding examinations, courses, and supplemental materials are provided. This further prepares me and other course participants for the business English world. There is also information about many professional organizations worldwide. Unit 6 does a great job of wrapping up a course that I found very informative and easy to follow. As I have discussed, I plan to apply several of the strategies I've learned from this course. I strongly feel I have and will continue to be a better teacher because of my completion of the reading, research, exercises, writing, and exams contained in the six units. My thanks to the developers of these materials. I'm ready for the next chapter of my English teaching career!
