This unit helps teachers decide the ideal ESA methods to teach either vocabulary, introduce new language structures as well as language functions. At the end of the day, the students need to be presented with the new language, understand the definition of the new language, how it is formed and be able to practise and produce it. Lessons that are focused on grammar and or vocabulary usually employ the straight arrow ESA method while lessons that are focused on functions usually employ either a boomerang or patchwork ESA approach. This eventually depends on the ESA approach and if it is suitable for the students who may be lower level students, mid-level students or advanced level students. The choice of the ESA method would lie on the teacher's ability to understand and cater to the needs of their students. Vocabulary lessons are quite straightforward and use the straight arrow approach. Language structure lessons take a little more time to ensure students know the meaning, usage, forms, patterns as well as the difference in written and spoken forms and as such use the patchwork approach. Language function lessons use the boomerang and patchwork approaches that help emphasise the activation of language as these lessons would cover more functional aspects of the new language such inviting, refusing, agreeing, disagreeing, suggesting as well as appropriate usage. This unit was quite helpful with deciding how and where to start with teaching a new language.
