Unit 5 covered various teaching themes and gave macro examples of topics often covered when instructing business English courses which include lessons on telephone conversations and meeting discussions. These types of topics can limit the amount of creativity and depth of teaching activities allowed for practice so teachers must be very resourceful. Many ideas were then presented such as a case study lesson which must always begin with teaching the background of the issue and pre teaching the needed vocabulary. Examples of frameworking: a technique used to help understand difficult subjects like economics and physics were given by examining the company's past growth, present numbers and possible future growth to practice various verb forms. Using problem-solving cases was discussed and is a great way for groups of students to brainstorm and highlight key issues and tasks before moving on to come up with solutions. Unit 5 next focused on different games that could be played including Monopoly, Pictionary and simple hangman board games to practice compound words. Personally, I have taught Spanish for 20-years and used hangman all the time with children and they loved it, but I cannot imagine adults being motivated to play this in a business environment. Using the Internet for business correspondence, company emails etc. was recommended as well. I learned of the website that provides biographies on famous people and I think this will be a great addition to an ESOL class which allows the students to choose someone of interest to them. Speech Act theory was another topic that was covered that I had no idea about previously and can be applied to teaching business English when making offers and requests or trying to negotiate deals. The Unit came to an end with 3 diverse lesson plans aimed at pre-intermediate and intermediate stage learners.
