In Unit 4 I learned the different elements to structure a lesson plan, as well as what materials are available in both print and on the Web, the difference between authentic and non-authentic items and don'ts when designing my own materials. When using authentic materials it motivates the l learners because they can relate to the material, but disadvantages are that the info is not user-friendly and relevant, nor culturally and socially acceptable. When it comes to choosing which materials to present in the classroom, if using non-authentic items you need to first have in mind clear goals of what your objective is to teach whether it be speaking, listening, reading or writing or combined elements. One very important thing I learned that I never previously considered is to think about what if a planned activity you chose did not work. Unit 4 proceeded with lesson planning using the ESA engage, study and activate approach. It also reminded us to consider the amount of students, time of the lesson and length of the class and to continually monitor the lesson plan during the lesson if possible in order to make sure nothing was omitted.
