In this unit I learned about different types of classes and special groups that are likely to come across as an EFL teacher. When teaching beginners there are different categories that must be considered - the absolute beginner, the false beginner, the adult beginner, the young beginner, and the beginner without the Roman alphabet. I learned methodology and techniques for teaching beginners and also the possible problems that can arise in the classroom. I learned how teaching individual students differs from teaching groups and went over different sorts of activities, homework, and checking ideas as well. I learned specifically about teaching children and the differences in this kind of environment from an adult environment. I learned how to make a classroom seem more inviting, some do's and don'ts for teaching children during the lesson, and how to deal with discipline and management in the classroom. Then, I learned about Business English and the types of clients that could be encountered. Often their age varies greatly, they are tired from work and everything else going on in their personal lives, and attendance can often be sporadic. It is important to figure out exactly what these clients want and need from this English course and to pay attention to individual needs, but to try and overlap needs as a whole in order to have the most effective lesson for all. I learned about the needs form which includes the client's details and past learning experience, specific objectives, and what they would like to prioritize in the course. After receiving these forms back they can help greatly in planning the program. About halfway through the course, it is recommended to set some work that the participants can do individually and to take each student out for five minutes to elicit their reactions so far and to give their needs for the remainder of the course. I also learned about materials and things to consider before beginning to teach the course, in reference to my own 'expertise', on arrival, during the course, and after the course ends. I learned about teaching monolingual and multilingual classes which have their own advantages and disadvantages to each. It is important to avoid the use of the mother tongue in the classroom as often students will not be as motivated to learn and understand English.
