In this unit I learned about different ways of evaluating students' levels and progress, as well as for external exams that they will need to be prepared for. Three ways to assess a student's language level are tutorials, evaluation by the students, and tests. There are multiple different types of tests that can be taken at the appropriate times. The first are placement tests, which are designed to enable teachers to place new students into the correct class according to their language ability. Progress tests should be used periodically to gauge what language has been remembered or acquired and what language has been forgotten. Diagnostic tests are basically similar in content to placement tests, and are sometimes more extensive. They are given at the start of the course to see what the students already know, and to help the teacher prepare lessons and materials that will help students work on their own problem areas. Practice tests should follow the format and the structure of the external examination that they are being given in preparation for. I also learned about general external examinations, such as TOEFL, IELTS, TOEIC, and the Cambridge Assessment. The Cambridge Assessment is the work of the non-teaching department of the University of Cambridge, and these exams taken are the world's leading range of certificates for learners of English. The different categories of Cambridge exams are General English, which includes the KET, PET, FCE, CAE, and CPE. Also, there are the Skills for life and Business English (BEC and BULATS).
