In this unit I learned the different ways to teach and select vocabulary. When teaching vocabulary it is important to consider the similarity to the students' own language, the similarity to English words that they already know, the spelling and pronunciation, and the appropriacy. When selecting vocabulary one must consider the appropriacy to the students and the task, the frequency and coverage, and the teachability. Students need to know the meaning of a vocabulary item, the use, the word grammar, the interaction, the spelling, and the pronunciation. I learned about different techniques to teach vocabulary within the engage, study, and activate techniques. I looked at a straight arrow ESA vocabulary lesson. I also learned the techniques about teaching grammar and looked at a patchwork lesson to understand how to better teach grammar topics. I also looked at the teaching language functions which include areas such as inviting, refusing, agreeing, disagreeing, and suggesting. I looked at a boomerang lesson that helped me understand how to better teach these kinds of functions.
