Examples of authentic materials include TV commercials, brochures, newspapers, and other such things. These are materials that have been produced for real life purposes instead of for usage in a classroom. While authentic materials help expose students to natural or real-life usage of the language, some drawbacks include these materials not being graded for specific levels, the possibility of them containing sensitive material, and the teacher having to check that all the information contained within is relevant to the learning aims of the class.
Examples of non-authentic materials include textbooks, worksheets, grammar board games, etc. Non-authentic materials are created for the specific purpose of being used in the classroom as a teaching aid. In the context of teaching a Business English course, teachers should strive to create materials that are as authentic as possible from a business setting point of view.
