This unit covered the many roles a teacher may need to play including instructor, facilitator, mentor, psychologist, counselor, and policeman. Different teaching settings were discussed. This includes teaching individuals versus groups, identifying who pays the tuition, and classroom location differences such as an employer office versus a language school. The unit detailed advantages and potential problems with adult learners in general as well as one to one student to teacher situations. Challenges teaching groups were considered such as how to work with students with at different levels of ability. Developing the necessary reception skills of reading and listening as well as production skills of speaking and writing for business situations were discussed. Finally, the unit covered different teaching methods including grammar translation, PPP, and Engage/Study/Activate.
This unit was very helpful by giving me a good overview of the types of teaching settings in business I should expect, ideas on how to handle challenges, and information on different teaching methodologies.
