In the beginning of the Unit 3 we learn about different methods and techniques for teaching and learning language. We are told about advantages and disadvantages of those methods. However, none of them is proved to be the best. That's where we familiarize ourselves with Jeremy Harmer's synthetic methodology 'Engage, Study and Activate' that combines the most effective aproaches of its predecessors and gives the teacher more flexibility in the class. One of the main component of this system is the elicitation techniques. They can differ from class to class, may vary depending on the situation. Some simple examples of such techniques are provided (drawings, flashcards, miming, gap-filling, etc.). The teacher uses them to find out what his students already know and what they don't. Further, we learn about 3 components of the ESA lesson: 1. Engage - the main goal is to arouse students' interest and get them involved in the forthcoming learning. The teacher should warm up students abilities to speak and think in English as much as possible. 2. Study - this part is focused on introducing students to a new information and checking their understanding using worksheets with exercises afterwards. 3. Activate - this stage should encourage learners to use all material they have previously learnt in a freely manner with as much fluency and communication. The examples of the ESA lessons and the ideas for each stage are given. The unit ends with some recommendations about giving feedback and correction techniques.
