Unit 20 covered many possible problems that could arise in class and how to deal with them. It started with what to do with your first class, whether the students are new to each other or have already been in class together. I learned that the first lesson should not be used to try to teach anything, but to get to know the students, have them get to know each other if needed, and to establish rapport in all directions. Examples of activities to help with this may include surveys or pass the ball. Engage phase activities were reviewed as "warmers", such as hangman, Pictionary, and tongue twisters. I was taught that if students are of different learning levels, to put them into level-appropriate groups and/or pair weaker students with stronger ones. I was also taught several techniques to better teach large classes, such as appointing group leaders and using worksheets so all are involved. It was reiterated that English should be the only language spoken in class and to only respond to English and to make sure the lesson is not so difficult that they find it necessary to use their native language. I learned that students who may be resistant to participation may be helped with lots of pair work and role-play. Finally, I learned that listening activities should use recordings that are clear and of an appropriate level for the class.
